Ok I told my doctor about the Risperdal effects
He just said Stop it and take Zyprexa. I dont
wanted to argue with him and just said ok.
I have already taken Zyprexa. I dont think
I want to go there again. I need to look for
others meds. I believe doctors dont understand
I know is not correct but I think Im gonna start
prescribing my meds by myself.I dont want zyprexa. I dont want APs or at least not the ones I have already taken, It´s like going backward instead of forward. I would like
to have heard Abilify or something diferent. I need a change in my life, and taking the same is not the solution. I feel Im alone on this.

You dont really sound stubborn to me. I come across as a "stubborn" patient but..think about it: a shrink sees for 10-30minutes a month, sometimes less. The are NOT you. You are YOU. You have to live your life and deal with the effects, good or bad, of the medications you take. It makes sense that you should be pretty vocal about what you want and what you will and won't take...in an ideal situation, a doc would be pretty open about side effects, so you could know for sure how good (or bad) you could expect your life to be with given treatments. My fav. doc, for instance, told me flat out that I'd always have issues, and that over-medicating would make those worse; the best balance would be low-dose meds, but I should still expect to have more difficulty than my friends. That was harsh, but I really appreciated it.

Sorry, I don't think that I have been following your story, so I'm sure that I have missed a lot...but I just wanted to clarify...you DO want to try Abilify even though it is also an AP? Do you think that your pdoc would be unwilling to rx it? My sense is that pdocs are generally open to rx-ing whatever drug in the same class. Now if your doc is set on an AP and you are not, that is more complex.
BUT, I would go back to pdoc and say simply, that you have been doing some thinking and researching and you would feel better about trying something that you have not yet tried. Specifically, you want to try Abilify.
Please don't resort to self-rxing. It is a dangerous road. You don't know what sorts of drugs you may end up with, bad, fake, whatever. Also, if you have a bad reaction to something, it is so much easier to have a physician who knows what is going on.
I say push the doc on the Abilify.
Best,
EE

the previous poster has a very good point. Self Rx-ing is really *not* a good idea, and it can make finding the right treatment all that much more difficult. The overall easiest ways to address your problems would be to easier chat with this doc to get treatment more along the lines of whatever it is you'd like to try, or try to find another doc whose approach is more to your liking.

But what's wrong with that in this situation? You are stubbornly protecting yourself and trying to improve your quality of life. No one here has any problem with that.
Many times, I think, doctors don't understand just how awful it can be to take some of these drugs. Sure, it's the best they got, but that don't make it good.
My advice is two-fold:
First, I strongly urge you to write down a chart listing all the drugs you've taken, the side effects you experienced, and which side effects are total deal-breakers. That might help the doctor understand better what you find acceptable.
Secondly, and I think this is very important, ASK YOUR DOCTOR WHY he's pushing Zyprexa? What is his reasoning? If it's just that you took it before and HE thought it was helping, remind him that it really wasn't offering you acceptable quality of life. And then talk to him about that concept a bit more: quality of life. Ask him to put himself in your place, if that's what it takes.
And ask him why he's hesitant to try Abilify. It maybe be that he has a strong reason for it, and a reason you should respect. But you will only find out if you ask him.
This is the end of the thread.
