Hi,
Lamictal sends me hypomanic when I take it for bipolar depression.. I'm wondering whether anyone has ever used topamax as a means to stop the lamictal-induced hypomania?? I read about this possible option on Dr. Ivan Goldberg's psycom site associated with Dr. Bob's site..

> bpsMy first reaction when I read this is to ask you if you would consider using Zyprexa or any other AP as an antimanic / stabilizer. I wish there were more anecdotes on the board describing the use of Abilify in such circumstances. It would be a nice alternative if weight gain is an issue. Regardless, you could take a short trial of Zyprexa just to see whether or not persuing this strategy is warranted.

Hey SLS,
I tried zyprexa with lamictal and I felt very anxious, like I had constant inner tension.. I'm wondering if topamax can be an anecdote for that?bps

Hi BPS.

Darn.

I really don't know. The words you chose to describe your experience as "inner tension" are often used when akathisia is present. It would be an unusual reaction to Zyprexa. I doubt Topamax would help much if it is akathisia. You could perhaps use Seroquel instead of Zyprexa.
Have you tried Trileptal? I am taking it for bipolar depression and am experiencing intermittent improvements in combination with Lamictal. I can only pray that this stuff really sticks. I'm still not out of the woods yet.
Lamictal 150mg
Trileptal 900mg
Parnate 80mg
nortriptyline 100mg
Abilify 10mg

Right now, it is not very potent at all. I have been taking 900mg for 11 days. When I first raised the dosage up from 600mg, the antidepressant effect was significant and developed within 36 hours. I had about 5 days when I was convinced that I was on my way towards remission. Unfortunately, the improvement plateaued and I have since lost ground. There is still a residual improvement, though, and I am hoping that further dosage increases will establish a more robust and stable response. I don't know how high my doctor will let me go, but I told him that I wanted to push the dosage. I look foward to going up to 1200mg. Right now, I am experiencing no side effects. All I can say is that Trileptal has produced a true antidepressant effect in conjunction with the other medications I am taking. The trick is getting it to stick.
