Prozac versus Zoloft

Posted by ed_uk on May 15, 2005, at 11:15:38

Hi,

I'd like to hear from people who have taken both Prozac and Zoloft. I've taken Prozac but never Zoloft.

Anyway, I would like to know whether people have experienced more apathy (as a side effect) with Zoloft or with Prozac.

I have previously found all SSRIs to be sedating, including Prozac. If you have taken both Zoloft and Prozac..... which drug caused the most drowsiness?

Also, a little question for OCD sufferers. Did you notice any difference in effectiveness between Prozac and Zoloft??

What doses of Zoloft and Prozac did you take??

Ed.

Hi Ed, Prozac was the least sedating SSRI I took (I've taken them all), and it actually seemed to help my ADHD symptoms somewhat (5-HT2c antagonism?). Zoloft was worse for word-finding difficulties than Prozac. As far as apathy goes.. they all caused some apathy, but I'd say either Prozac or Zoloft were about the same in that respect but those two produced the least apathy of the bunch. Had more jaw-clenching/teeth grinding and restless legs on Zoloft than I did on Prozac. Zoloft seemed to work better for anxiety than Prozac, but Z made me a lot more nauseated than Proz.

I took Prozac for several years (am currently on Cymbalta). But I could not take Zoloft. It made me nauseated and drugged feeling.

Hi Ed,

I've taken both of them (Zoloft 200 mg. and Prozac 60 mg.). I found them to be very similar for me. I had a great month or two on Prozac without apathy but that didn't last. Overall though I'd say maybe a little less apathy on Zoloft but that may have been because things in my life were better. Prozac gave me an obvious tremor which others interpreted as me being anxious. Zoloft didn't give me that. I couldn't even tell I was taking anything when I was on Zoloft.

I've taken both and would have to say that prozac had the least sedating qualities.

I should also say that neither of these drugs made me really "sleepy". It was more of a "I don't wanna move" kinda feeling.

I can't remember the prozac dose I was on, but I was on 50mgs of zoloft, which I thought was way too much. I could've gotten by with just 25mgs, but the doc didn't see things my way.

Zoloft was by far the worse of the two drugs. I won't try it again. But prozac was pretty good before it pooped out.

I took Prozac for several years before it pooped out on me, and I did very well on it. No sedation that I can remember, and I really don't remember the dosage either. I know it was rather low. I take Zoloft now, and at night because it does make me tired if I take it in the morning. I take 100mg. per day. I have taken it once before, and I think it may have caused my restless leg syndrom. I have thought about asking for Prozac when the Zoloft poops out on me again. I don't have any problems with it if I take it at night.

This was not one of your questions, but I would like to ask you if Zoloft can be combined with Wellbutrin, Topomax and Adderall? -L

Ed, Once I was given prozac when it first came out in the US. The first day I had energy and wallpapered the foyer, second day I was anxious, third day panic . It took 3 days of xanax to get over this. That was also when it only came in 20mg capsules. The pdoc begged me to take it every three days but I refused. Now the zoloft as you know is only 25mg and I'm so afraid of them I won't go higher. So I feel nothing from it. Fondly, PJ O

Ed,
Haven't been on this board in awhile because I'm back to normal, but I was bored so I thought I'd drop in.
I've tried Zoloft and Prozac and Prozac has worked for me very well for me. Zoloft did nothing and anything above 25mg made me worse. I've been on Prozac for 7 weeks and I've been back to normal for the past two weeks and my anxiety is ZERO. Once I got off my asthma medication (Advair), I suddenly got better, but Prozac is great! I sincerely think the Advair (corticosteroids) I was taking was affecting how the SSRI's worked in me.
Also, I think giving up on your degree is a HORRIBLE idea!!!! You'll feel worse if you drop out and you'll regret it. Just push yourself to get through. Hope you start feeling better.

CKl, I'm so glad you're back to normal. Don't forget me. Send me pictures so I can keep up with your success. Good luck. Although with your talent that's all you need. I'll definitely be thinking of you. Say Hi to Rudi for me okay? Fondly, Phillipa

Prozac 10mg to 40mg. Zoloft 50mg to 100mg.

I had more apathy with zoloft. It had more of that typical ssri numbingness about it. At first zoloft felt good but pooped out real fast and just felt numb.

Prozac is mildly activating to me, zoloft was neutral to slightly sedating.

Of all the ssri's, prozac is the best for me because it just doesn't feel like all the other ssri's. I've tried dosing from 10mg to 40mg, and I like the way 10mg feels the best. Zoloft is my second favorite. I didn't like any of the others because they numbed emotions too much.

I am a believer that either one of these meds works a whole lot better, faster and longer when combined with other meds, such as atypical antipsychotics or stimulants.

Hi Ed,

I took both and Prozac was much better.
Zoloft/Lustral had a bit of unnatural anxious feeling. It was not that bad,but prozac (along with Effexor) was the only SSRis that I felt my body accepted them and felt semi- normal.
However, when I take a SSri, I always take something else, either to counter act the SE or to boost the effect.I always felt that SSRi's are not enough. That is why they were combined with benzos or low-dose TCA/Trazodone...etc.
This is how I rate SSRis :
1- Prozac : the best out of them.it is somehoe "atypical" .
2- Cipram : OK but a bit sedating and very apathetic.
3- Lustral/Zoloft : OK but a little to the anxious.
4- Luvox/Faverin : Actually very good,but I never gave it a fair chance.
5- Seroxat/Paxil : one of the worst ever!!

- As far as apathy, they all have this bad effect, and in my experience reducing the dose or adding a very low dose of Flupenthixol (0.5mg) or Amisulpirirde(50mg) helps a little, but I never stayed on them for more than few days because of the fear of the worst ever side effect in the world : Akathisia.

Best regards,Ed.
Darkhorse.

I've taken Prozac at 20, 60, 80 mg. It was the first ssri i took, and it worked for my depression.
I've tried most of the others trying to get rid of the insomnia effects of prozac, but I always come back to prozac. P and Z never made me feel sedated--I wish. i have a high tolerance to most meds, thus the 80 mg dosage after a few years.
i used zoloft this year for the first time. It took almost 2 months to work for me at 100mg. after the long wait, it worked well, but still the insomnia. Since it worked so well, I stopped taking it at all for some months now. I take Buspar, and doxepin or notriptyline to aid sleeping, and I'm fine. However, since I am now retired, and no stress to speak of, everything is so mush better. Keeping my fingers crossed though. Good luck finding a med that works without bugging you with adverse side-affects. jets

Hi: I know this is an old posting but wondered if you're still on Cymbalta and how its working for you?

Thanks,
Karen
