Xanax and humming/ringing in the ear

Posted by chess on April 19, 2005, at 8:30:13

i take xanax and my ear has been popping and i get a humming/ringing in my ear
anyone know if Xanax causes humming in the ear (like tinnitus) or is this a result of my withdrawal from Xanax?
is the humming in my ear a medical concern i should tell my doctor about?
i also take Lexapro 20mg

I used to get a popping in my ears. I'm not sure if I was on xaxax then or not. Now you have me thinking. Fondly,Phillipa

That's not humming.. that's me singing sweet nothings in your ear.. J/K

I don't know but I've had "stuffy" ears off and on since being on Benzo's. Maybe there is a connection!

If you are withdrawing from xanax, be advised tinnitus is a well known and documented withdrawal symptom. I'll bet you that if you step down the dose and wait 14 days it will completely go away. Or step up the dose for two days and it will go away.

Xanax saved my life at one point, but today I can assure you that for me it's not a good drug to take long-term.

Scott,

I'm curious what your situation was when you say that xanax saved your life at one point, but today, for you, it's not a good drug to take long term.

I've used xanax for almost 8 years and every time I've tried to quit it's been pure hell. Now I feel stuck with it. There was a time when it did help me; now it's a hindrance and I feel it contributes to more depression than I would normally have. Additionally, I think I'm now prone to seizures from trying to withdraw. These meds (benzos) are life savers and life crushers.

Tom

When I had my first 'breakdown' if you will... Nothing came to the rescue of a 17 year old formerly cool as hell dude who was now lying on the floor of his parents living room for three days like xanax did. I could not leave the house and had frequent panic attacks on top of a severe depression. I would get so anxious I thought maybe I was gay and that was the root of my problems. I was totally and completely LOST. However...over time I lost track of where that episode ended and my more than intimate relationship with benzo's began. Now I suspect all they do 13 years later is contribute to a flat affect and a chronically depressed personality. I'm often irritable, still anxious and depressed at a low level and my life just hasn't materialized as nicely as I thought it would. I know that last statement lacks any gratitude, but thats how I feel right now. I now take 20-30mgs adderall along with the clonazepam .75mg. Sometimes i think just to counteract the sedation and brain impairment benzos cause when taken chronically and long term. In May I'm checking into a hospital to rid myself of these drugs and give myself 6 months recovery to see exactly what I need medically if anything and to finally find out what I want out of my life. For years after college I've just been gliding about trying to blot out my misery through psychiatry.
