Posted by TRIPP on May 17, 2004, at 12:18:37

I NEEDED TO KNOW IF NALTREXONE IS INDEED SAFE TO TREAT OBESITY? I HAVE HAD PRIOR ADDICTION ISSUES AND I AM ALSO BI-POLAR. I AM CURRENTLY ON PROZAC AND WELLBUTRIN AND WANTED TO USE NALTREXONE IF POSSIBLE.

Hi tripp, Naltrexone is an 0piate antagonist.
It would be especially helpful if you were still in the throes of addiction. It is quite the contrary ...not an "addictive agent". It was very helpful in my cessation of quiting booze- it blocks the 'high' from things that we humans like to and tend to abuse. I don't really see how it would be addictive at all. You *cant* abuse anti-abuse drugs! My guess is that your doc. may be using it in attempt to help you quit using food as a drug--- just my thoughts though!

Hi Snapper, thanx for the response. What I was meaning to say was I wanted to use Naltrexone for overeating and to help with my turning to food now rather than your average "drugs" to comfort me emotionally. I just read somewhere that they were thinking Naltrexone would help in obesity also. Also, I didn't know if it was safe to mix with antidepressants because nowhere on the web does it say so. If you can help I would appreciate it. Thanx!

Hi TRIPP, I would assume that it would be safe to combine Revia (naltrexone) with AD's. I have however also read somewhere that Naltrexone can worsen depression, but I wouldn't let that deter you from using it in the form that you describe to help you in using it in way that would help you to stop using food as a drug and in turn being useful in treating obesity. hope that makes sense and is helpful for you! Good Luck
Snapper
