I've been trying to find a drug that would lower my benzo dose when I do presentations/formal public speaking. I end having to use such a high dose of benzo that it sometimes intereferes with my thought processes. Have tried atenolol (up to 100 mg) to no avail. Alone it didn't do much and when combined with benzo, I felt the same as taking benzo alone. Has anybody compared the effects of atenolol versus inderal? Are there any reasons why inderal might work where atenolol hasn't? Thanks

i have not, but from reading a small number of comments on one or both, i get the impression that Inderal is better for specific/situational anxiety than atenolol for some reason. And this is after previously wanting to try atenolol instead of Inderal because of the former's [almost?] complete lack of CNS effects-- thereby having less cognitive and affective effects.

Maybe it is becAUSe of the fact that Inderal crosses the blood-brain barrier to some extent that it is more effective-- maybe some CNS antagonism (even if minute) of NE beta receptors has additional anti-anxiety results than would JUST peripheral effects alone. The primary effects of Inderal are still definitely peripheral, but maybe the minor CNS actions are somewhat important as well. i have no idea, i'm just guessing. This is probably incorrect. But regardless, propranolol (Inderal) seems to be the most commonly efficacious anti-anxiety beta-blocker on the market (though i could be wrong about that too).

Hi there-
I have used propanolol 120mgs, in 3 40mg. doses, alongside clonazepam 2 to 4 mgs. daily prn., for about 5 yrs. with no negative results. My p-doc allows me to 'play' with the dosages, so I am able to lower the daily allowances if I do not need them.
The clonazepam quiets my head, while the propanolol is superb for treating my most prominent physical anxiety symptom-a tight, squeezing pressure-pain which grips my chest. I have had the cardio tests-negative-So i am very familiar with this dreadful feeling. I also have GAD, ADD and recurrent depressive illness...all of which are factors contributing to my hypersensitivity to any type of stress.
Using the propanolol manages my physical symptoms in a way that no benzo can. But, I also require the clonazepam for 'brain/thought' tuning & coping. My Lex is very helpful here, too.
I'm sure if I did not have my propanolol, I wd. be grasping at higher doses of benzos, analgesics, AD's & whatnot in order to attain the effect these little beta-blockers seem to do effortlessly.blue skies, nothin' but blue skies.........

Atenolol + clonazepam = no problems at all.
Atenolol + xanax = no problems at all.
I think the combo is good for getting a hold of both the physical and mental aspects of anxiety.

This is just feedback, ignore please if not wanted. I reacted badly to Inderol--weirdly, it gave me panic attacks!!! I felt trapped and unable to breathe, and just sort of unreal, almost disassociated, like I was about to have a heart attack. But I often get paradoxical reactions--an anti-psychotic has made me psychotic as a side effect, anti-anxiety benzos have made me more anxious, anti-depressants have caused depression, etc.

Inderal alone works really well on my anxiety. I only take 10mg. If I am very stressed I do take a klonopin too.[0.5mg.]The inderal was not prescribed for anxiety, but for tremors from lithium. I accidentally found out that it was working well for the anxiety. terrics
