Amisulpride Substitutes?

Posted by Epiphany on January 8, 2004, at 0:23:29

I started taking Amisulpride at 25mg a while ago after reading here about peoples positive responses to it for dysthymia+anhedonia. Well It really worked for me! For the first time in a long time I could enjoy little things again and feel connected to the world and people. Unfortunately though, I can no longer obtain it from the source I used to and now I have no other options. Anyone here that benefited from Amisulpride find help with something similar? It
is the only drug that has ever worked for me. Please help!

Here's a quote I pulled from this link: http://paddy42.tripod.com/Culturally_Ecclectic/merk_mood.htm

"The antipsychotic amisulpride, a dopamine agonist unavailable in the USA, in low doses (25 to 50 mg/day) has been reported to be effective. The antipsychotic trifluoperazine 1 mg/day is roughly equivalent and may be used in refractory cases of severe dysthymia but only when its benefits outweigh the risk of tardive dyskinesia from long-term use."

However, I have no personal experience with the antipsychotic mentioned and I can't be too confident of the information presented on this site since it refers to amisulpride as a dopamine agonist, when it is actually a dopamine antagonist. The antipsychotic mentioned also binds at D1-type (D1,D5) type receptors, where as sulpiride/amisulpride bind only at D2-type (D2,D3,D4) receptors.

Sulpiride is a very similar compound and is widely available. Unlike amisulpride, it's available in the US if that's where you happen to be. I haven't tried it, so I can't speak to its effectiveness, but I know some people recommend it over amisulpride for dysthymia and social phobia.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I hear a lot about TD with trifluoperazine. Does that carry a greater risk then other Antipsychotics? Never heard of Sulpride before, I'll have to look into that! What about Zyprexa, is that similar also?

Thanks again

no sulpiride in usa

Unfortunatly, sulpiride is *not* available in the US either. If you have a US source, I'd like to know what it is (I'm sure the FDA would as well :-) In fact, they're even discontinuing sulpiride (Dogmatil) in Europe..
