I asked my doctor about fish oil once before and he told me that if I was going to start taking it, I needed to take at least 4000 mg (4 g) per day.

As for the magnesium, do a google search for "magnesium depression" and you will find plenty of information. Here is one good site:

I've used both fish oil and magnesium for various reasons.

For fish oil, 1 gram of EPA has found to be clinically effective for certain depression. I personally have found that 900 mg of EPA+DHA is very helpful. (this is the equivilant of 3 standardized fish oil caps)

As far as magnesium can go, it is best for those who have typical depression (ie insomnia, anxiety, etc)

300 mg of a reasonable form, would be beneficial.

Y'all be careful about taking mega doses of magnesium or any other supplement. There is such a small window of normal limits of so many of the standard minerals and electrolytes. Too much of one will ofset others and cause unwanted and sometimes very adverse physical side effects. I believe in mega vitamin doses to a degree, but the trace minerals and all those type of things really do need to fall within normal limits of body chemistry. It's nothing to fool around with.

I've taken up to 4 grams of fish oil a day (omegabrite capsules, Andrew Stoll's product) and never felt a damn thing. I see other's testifying to its effect, but...nada for this cat.

I've been taking 1000mg qday of fish oil too for about the past two weeks. Your dose doesn't scare me a bit. It's the standard electrolytes of the body like sodium, magnesium, calcium, potassium, stuff like that that really needs to fall into a small window. Out of normal limits of these and others can adversely affect the heart's function as well as the kidneys and liver. I am no expert by any means, but i have seen what elevated and/or low levels of these chemistries can do to the body. Truly, sometimes death. But fish oil and stuff like that, i have never seen a case where this was an issue regarding any negative functioning of the body. What effects are you hoping for from your fish oil?

The above link was about he last thing I posted on fish oil. Since then I am thinking fish oil is probably good for over all health, but it is no magic bullet. Maybe some people have much stronger response than I did. I still take it (Omagbrite) but if I took it and no meds I'd be in very real distress. One thing is certain it doesn't hurt.

magnesium is a commnon deficiancy

I don't neccesarily agree that electrolites should not be supplemented. Magnesium is lost redily during stress and is often deficiant in the diet.

Magnesium is lost in processing while sodium is often much too high in the american diet.

I personally think most people who eat the regular american diet should suplement with
megnesium, not megadose but just the daily RNI.
