ANXIETY!

Posted by birdie-bird-bird on February 20, 2003, at 17:10:07

I have been trying everything for my anxiety, it is chronic, just started 4 months ago. i have weird thoughts that i am with strangers although i am among friends or family...hard to explain. i have constant butterflies for no apparent reason, and sometimes i am afraid to leave my house. i have tried lexapro, and paxil and they have only made the anxiety SKYROCKET to unbearable levels. this happens after a week of taking it. my dr. has put me on klonopin for a month to calm me down, which worked, but i can't be on that forever. he has recently put me on effexor xr hoping that the klonopin will keep me calm enough to handle the initial response. i have been taking it for 3 days at 37.5 mg. so far my anxiety has gotten worse again....i am getting VERY frustrated at these medicene's that are supposed to make you feel better, making me feel worse! how long do i stick with this?

FRUSTRATED and SCARED

Klonopin can be used for a while. I have a doc who has been with me through it all... trying this and that !!! There is ALOT of negative information about benzos, but for some of us, they work really well and at pretty low doses over the "long" hall. There are post here that will attest to it's use without "problems". It's not a perfect drug... I don't believe there is one. It's has it's draw backs, but so far, it's the only thing that's REALLY worked for me. I may explore something else, but each time I entertain that idea, I remember the not nice times I had with a host of other meds. Everyone's different. Good Luck... anxiety is awful to deal with, I know !!!

thank you so much for your encouragement! i know that i need to just stick with it and that the initial anxiety is normal, but it's SO hard. sometimes i can't even leave the house. but soon it will pass hopefully, if this med is even the right one for me. the klonopin seems to take the edge off, but it wears off. i am a christian and pray everyday for god's grace and peace....now i'm just waiting. and i exercise a lot too. i thought i was a healthy person. it bums me out. but thanks :)

As SBOATRN said, you should be able to stay on Klonopin indefinitely if necessary (as long as your doctor will prescribe it). My psychiatrist has me on long-term K therapy and doesn't seem worried about it; the downside is that if you do discontinue, you'll need to do so gradually (just as you would with Effexor, SSRIs, etc.).

Benzos are safe, effective drugs for many, and some people take them for decades. I've discussed dependency issues and quitting K with my pdoc and he says sure, I can quit it -- but the anxiety will likely return. All things considered (and I have a fair bit of experience with various psychiatric meds) I think my mental and physical health is best served by sticking with Klonopin.

Chronic anxiety is hard on your system, and my experience with ADs etc. has been very negative. I feel much safer, saner, and healthier with benzos. The supposed dangers are vastly exaggerated in my opinion, and based on decades of objective study of these meds.

I couldn't agree with you more.. Benzos really help me. So many docs won't give them out any more and I get afraid to ask. I did find an MD who would give then to me. It makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong.
Let them suffer with severe anxiety and see if they don't go running for a benzo!
I also take an SSRI so that helps alot too.
Years ago I had a doc put me on klonopin hot and heavy for 2 years and then rip me off of them it was the worst withdrawl I ever experienced and I had some mental addiction besides physical.. It was scary.. He labeled me an addict too on my charts.
after he was the one that controlled my prescriptions.
Aint that a laugh!
