As SBOATRN said, you should be able to stay on Klonopin indefinitely if necessary (as long as your doctor will prescribe it). My psychiatrist has me on long-term K therapy and doesn't seem worried about it; the downside is that if you do discontinue, you'll need to do so gradually (just as you would with Effexor, SSRIs, etc.).
Benzos are safe, effective drugs for many, and some people take them for decades. I've discussed dependency issues and quitting K with my pdoc and he says sure, I can quit it -- but the anxiety will likely return. All things considered (and I have a fair bit of experience with various psychiatric meds) I think my mental and physical health is best served by sticking with Klonopin.
Chronic anxiety is hard on your system, and my experience with ADs etc. has been very negative. I feel much safer, saner, and healthier with benzos. The supposed dangers are vastly exaggerated in my opinion, and based on decades of objective study of these meds.
