lexapro. Is it really that good?

Posted by house on October 14, 2002, at 14:38:39

It seems to me that a lot of people are having success with Lex..Just curious if these are the same people who have been treatment resistant like myself their entire life or is it that it's just getting a lot of hype because it's the new kid on the block?

I guess it's been around three weeks for me, haven't noticed any improvement on Lexapro. I am a fellow refractory depressive and have not had much success with anything else. It seems like the people responding well to Lexapro do so quickly and dramatically, but I am trying not to completely give up yet. Maybe they also have had success with other meds in the past. I see my doctor today, maybe I will have more info when I return.

Ask this question after Lexapro is out (and people on it) for 6 months and then a year.
The answer will have real meaning at that point.
A few weeks/months mean nothing in the context of
a life long illness.

I am having wonderful success on Lexapro. This is my 6th or 7th SSRI I have tried. All the others had MAJOR s/e's. Serzone caused me to have am irregular heartbeat after only a few doses, and Geodon caused me to have GERD. The others had affects on my migraines, weight gain, sexual dysfunction, and/or drowsiness. Most of the meds had a combo of all the s/e's. I have tried Wellbutrin, Paxil, Geodon, Serzone, Prozac and Xanax. I'm sure there's one more (it started with an "s" or a "c") but it was at the beginning of my battle with depression, which started almost 7 years ago (I was 12) and I can't remember the name. I have come to the realization that everyone is SO different and it takes some time (and frustration!) to find the right drug or combo. I felt like giving up after trying Serzone and Geodon back-to-back and having severe problems. I went to the ER about 5 times within 3 months while on those two meds! I had to have all kinds of tests done just to figure out what was wrong with me. With the Serzone, I thought I was having a heartattack! My doc told me some scary news: if I had continued taking the Serzone, it would have caused permanant damage to my heart! Now THAT is discouraging! The only reason I even tried any more drugs after those scary ones was because I began to get worse and worse without any meds. Then I decided I would have to keep searching for the right meds to make my life liveable.
Anyways, I hope Lexapro works for all the new users. I know it has been a wonder drug for me so far!

Lexapro is helping me. The side effects were nasty for a few days, but now that I take it at night, I sleep through the zombie-like feeling it brought. I am also on 150 mg. of Wellbutrin SR once a day, and this combo is working well for me.

Serzone and Lexapro for generalized anxiety dis.?

I have GAD and I have been on Klonopin for 4 years, but now I want to get off of it. All the SSRIs I've taken in the past have given me such bad side effects that I have stayed away from them, but I think the only way for me to get off the Klonopin is to go onto a anti-depressant. My pdoc told me about Serzone and Lexapro. She said she hasn't had enough feed back from patients that are on these drugs, so she isn't sure if she wants to put me on either of these. Has anyone had any experiences on these drugs? and if so were they good or bad? I've read alot of talk about Lexapro, different people say different things. I haven't heard anything about Serzone. Has anyone with GAD been on either of these drugs? My anxiety is very extreme.

Hi, I am also taking lexapro 10mg with wellbutrin 200mg . How long have you been on both of these drugs? Have you had any weight gain? I have been on wellbutrin for 2 months and lex for 3 weeks. I have had no weight gain ,but a lack of sex drive and then some. Any feedback would help. THANKS

I've been on Wellbutrin (150- i time per day) for about a year and a half though I took some time off from it last winter. I just started Lex about 2 weeks ago. No weight gain -- sex drive okay with Wellbutrin, and I haven't noticed any difference since starting the Lex. Had a zombie-like feeling with the Lex for about a week until I began taking it at night. Now I feel wonderful! I'm sleeping, waking rested, and smiling even when I don't think about it.
