I am weaning off of Celexa, yet going through a terrible time with insomnia. My psychiatrist has given me various drugs(Haldol, Starnoc, various other ant-psychotic drugs for some reason, but they either did nothing or made my depression/anxiety worse). Presently I am taking Immovane and ativan to sleep at night, which used to give me horrible hang-over and crying lags during the day. I have been referred to a sleep clinic (FINALLY!!) and hopefully this will help with the insomnia. I tried doubling the Celexa dose (20-40mg), but the side effects were horrible (jaw clenching, grinding at night, more depression, ect). Other SSRIs have side effects as well that I cannot tolerate, so I am trying to get "drug-free"...this is my goal.
Anyhoo...to the point I am trying to make...I have started taking high doses of Magnesium (1200mgs per day), and it seems to get rid of the depression much better than any anti-depressant I have tried. Apparently we are a magnesium-lacking society, which is causing so many depressive disorders and such. Has anyone else heard of this? There is a website that discusses this issue, which I found very informative...

Anyone else heard of this and had sucess?????

Magnesium is very close to Lithium on the
periodic table. Some say it has a similar
but less pronounced effect at ballancing
the mood. Let your test of it be honest
and open. For some people, their depression
is started by some nutritional deficiancy.
But by all means if it starts to fail be
open for the warning signs.
Good Luck

Hi,
I also take magnesium and calcium and find the combination to work well. Perhaps you should be balancing the magnesium with calcium as well. It is best to ask your physician about it and to check if the high dose you are on can be problematic.

I take a mulit-vitamin with calcium, plus I drink at least a bag of skim milk a day. Too much calcium apparently can over-ride the magnesium...I used to also take extra calcium, but since I have stopped the extra, and added the magnesium, it seems to work better.
Going to a sleep clinic on Wednesday night...I hope it's positive...well...it will be if they remember to tape "The Amazing Race" for me!!!!!
