Parnate poop-out

Posted by inertia on August 9, 2002, at 13:56:11

A few years ago, I was on Parnate and it worked great. The extra bonus for me was that, compared to the SSRI that I had taken before I switched, the sexual side effects were negligible.

Unfortunately, after about a month, it stopped working. I know this happens with other drugs, but I was wondering if anyone else experienced this with Parnate.

Thanks.

How much were you taking and did you try increasing the dose?

It's been so long I forgot the exact dose, but we went high. I know I definitely went up to 90 mg! Maybe we rounded it up to an even 100.

i took parnate and immediately felt awesome...
after about a month i felt down again -- so i asked my doc... and apparently your body gets used to the stimulant effect...
but the antidepressant effect is something totally different -- and takes longer to kick in

maybe you didn't wait for the non-stimulant antidepressant effect to kick in -- or maybe you don't get a non-stimulant antidepressant effect?
i don't know

are you saying that it stopped working one month from your first dose? ..
because if indeed you are saying that within a month you had a decent noticeable effect and then the effect dissappeared we are probably talking about a stimulant effect as non-stimulant antidepressant effects take much longer to be that noticeable

Thanks so much for answering my post.

I was on Parnate for several months. I started getting well about 3 wks after starting it, felt well for about 1 month and then relapsed. Even though I raised the dose and gave it a long time to work, I still didn't get better. I finally stopped it since I was really scared of the tyramine reaction and you can't combine it with many meds.

I wrote in another post that I get a similar response with Lamictal. I feel great for a week and then I relapse. It's so frustrating.

I think it's because my bipolar d/o was poorly controlled for so long that I've become harder to control.

Don't forget about the idea of augmenting some of your trials. If Parnate was working, you might have been able to add something to kick it into gear again. The same with Lamictal. You might suggest this to your doctor next time. Or if you wanted to try the Parnate again.

I'm currently on Parnate and augmenting with Lamictal.
