Klonopin + Dexedrine????

Posted by Carlos on March 30, 2002, at 3:54:36

I have social anxiety/phobia, and mild depression.

I've been trying out Klonopin (1mg) and Dexedrine(5mg). Klonopin knocks me out, cold...for a good 3 hours. I was wondering if dexedrine will counter affect the klonopin? Dexedrine seems to give me lots of energy, but I don't want to go outside and interact and stuff. Since Klonopin knocks me out, I've only taken it about 4 times, and only at night. I just recently found out it has a really long half-life (16+ hours) So does this mean if i take it at night, the "effects" will still be there the next day?

Oh, I should also mention I've been on 50mg Zoloft for the last month.

Hi Carlos,

I used to set my alarm clock an hour before I wanted to wake up, take my Adderall (dexedrine like), and then wake up and hour later after the Adderall kicked in. The Klonopin just knocked me out so bad. but I was taking 1 mg 3x a day of Klonopin. I would guess if you just take it at night, it may be out of your system by mid day the next day, but only you could tell.

A lot of people have tried to do a dexedrine/klonopin balance game, and it does work well if you can get the ratios correct. But you may be playing with fire in terms of dealing with 2 habit forming substances and using their side effects to offset one another (just my opinion).

Best Regards,
John

You might split the Klonopin in 1/2's or 1/4's

I've taken Klonopin and Ritalin, or more recently Adderall, everyday for about 7 years and I'm not hooked!! (R. Pryor cocaine joke.)

These drugs along w/ Wellbutrin and Celexa keep me funtioning at maybe 70%. Difficult to tell really.

I would take some Klonopin *every* nite as part of a regimen. That's what I have done for 2-3 years now. I never wanted to take more of it. I *do* take more of it (PRN)during the day-but it has a tendency to make me depressed (and causes some pretty bad cognitive sfx), so I avoid doing that. The parent drug is far more active than its metabolites (for various things), so if your SP sfx are fairly bad you might be better off taking one tab at nite, and then a half-tab midday. Dex won't do much for getting you out, what it *will* do quite well is facilitate conversations with strangers. In other words, when you wind up talking with strange people, it doesn't seem like much of a big deal-you feel a genuine *interest* in what they are saying, what they think and feel, etc. That interest and what they are saying is focused on more exclusively and your own negative thoughts are inhibited much better. It isn't going to do much for "free-floating" anticipatory anxiety-that's where Klonopin or SSRI works better.

Do Stimulants Really Help Social Phobia?

Hey There,

I have social anxiety and have tried a klonopin/stimulant combo. I still am not clear how effective stimulants are for social anxiety. They definately help with conversation and socialiblity. But I never felt like my *real* self ... more *high*.

Can anyone comment on this? Do stimulants restore normal personality or just make you high?

Hi Tye,

I feel that I am closest to who I really am when I'm on low dose Dexedrine. Unfortunately, I can't say that I'm myself when I'm on Adderall or methylphenidate (Ritalin, etc.). Adderall causes so many physical problems (tremors, palpitations, etc.) that it's hard to know what's going on mentally. The Concerta form of Ritalin is the best of the Methylphenidate formulations for me, but I get kind of morose on it. My mood is better on Dexedrine, but Dex never makes me high. I'm just me, but more focused with a tiny bit more energy. Unfortunately, almost all of the real antidepressants (Wellbutrin, ssris, etc) change my personality, and none of them has changed me into the sort of person that I enjoy being around.

Hey Bekka,

Thanks for the information. I have heard responses like your often .... that is dexedrine seem unique in helping mood, but not inducing a "drugged" or "high" feeling. I will have to look more into dexedrine pharmacology.

Thanks again.

Hi Tye,

I was wondering about your remark about being "normal".

I found that the stimulants like Adderall would make me talk peoples ears off and feel very "high". This was not how I normally am. Normally I am depressed or agitated. So I guess I'm not looking for a medicine that makes me feel "normal". ;)

May I ask you what your current medicine cocktail is?

John

Hey John,

I guess when I say "normal", I mean euthymic. Not depressed, dysthmic, hypomanic, or manic but somewhere in the middle. Of course that is normal for me, but everyone's normal is different. Some people are looking for a high feeling, not me.

My meds are:
Klonopin 0.5mg
Neurontin 900mg
Seligiline 15mg

Take care!

Tye
