Does Seroquel Cause Weight Gain?

Posted by fachad on March 8, 2002, at 11:21:37

Does Seroquel cause weight gain like other APs?

I know that all the older APs like thorazine caused severe weight gain, and some of the more popular newer ones like Risperdal and Zyprexa are even worse, causing "diabesity" (diabetes and obesity, each feeding the other and making the other worse).

So is Seroquel any different?

I've got tough insomnia, and I've seen quite a few here use Seroquel for that.

i've been using it for two months and have not noticed any weight gain. it seems to be helping out as a mood stabilizer & sleep aid. i'm cautiously optimistic about this medication. my p-doc has had good success with seroquel in his bipolar patients, more so than the other atypicals and mood stabilizers.

Although weight gain has been reported with quetiapine (Seroquel), it does not appear to be as frequent and significant as that of olanzapine (Zyprexa) and clozapine (Clozaril).

Among the atypical antipsychotics, most notorious for causing weight gain, diabetes, and elevated triglycerides are Zyprexa and Clozaril; ziprasidone (Geodon) the least; risperidone (Risperdal) and quetiapine (Seroquel) in between.

The following is the result of a 10-week, placebo-controlled study, comparing weight change on standard drug doses of antipsychotics (from the most to the least weight gain). Unfortunately, quetiapine not included:

1. clozapine (Clozaril, Leponex)
2. olanzapine (Zyprexa)
3. mesoridazine (Serentil, Lidanar, Lidanil)
4. thioridazine (Mellaril)
5. sertindole (Serlect; Serdolect)
6. chlorpromazine (Thorazine, Largactil, Sonazine, Aminazine)
7. risperidone (Risperdal)
8. haloperidol (Haldol, Serenace)
9. fluphenazine (Prolixin, Permitil, Moditen, Modecate)
10. ziprasidone (Geodon)
11. molindone (Moban, Lidone)
12. placebo

I'm on 400mg Seroquel for antidepressant augmentation/anxiety/sleep and it has worked very well for all of them--but I am extrememly suspicious regarding it's appetite inducing effects--I'm even taking 60mg dexedrine and am still hungry all the time. Of course some of it may be due to the desipramine too. I've thougth of switching to Geodon but am afriad of it causing anxiety.
