CALMAX and B-COMPLEX for anxiety, insomnia

Posted by beardedlady on March 1, 2002, at 12:21:23

Has anyone had experience with either of these to treat stress, anxiety, and/or insomnia?

I have tried every supplement on the market.

Cal Max may help (didn't help me), but a good
diet should cover that base.

B-complex vitamins are good to take in general.

2 things have made a noticeable difference:

- 2 Tablespoons/Day cold-pressed Flax-Seed Oil
very relaxing. Takes 2-3 weeks to notice full
effects. I buy the Spectrum brand.

- This voodoo sleep aid called:
"Hyland's Homeopathic Insomnia,
Natural Relief from Insomnia and Restlessness".
Strong Stuff. Contains some strange herbs/flowers
with hypnotizing powers. Best sleep aid I ever took.
Throw out your valerian root, 5-htp, benadryl.
God knows what this stuff does to the brain and
liver.

A defeciency in any of the B-vitamins, or Vitamin C or E, will add immensely to anxiety disorders. Starting with the basics, like these that you talk about, is a great idea! Believe me. I get substantial benefits from C and E. I don't take the B-complex though, simply because I am on Celexa, an SSRI, and I also have ADHD. Too much serotonin worsens my attention span, and makes me feel pretty spaced out. I shoot for the C or Ginseng, which both exhibit a stimulant like action, to combine with the Celexa to help me stay focused and alert while I increase my serotonin at the same time.

Frankie.

John,

Where do you buy the "Hyland's Homeopathic Insomnia, Natural Relief from Insomnia and Restlessness"?

Hi Ron,

I buy it at Randall's grocery store in Austin, Tx.
I've seen it on the net too.

I recently investigated the ingredients to see
what I was putting in my body. This stuff was
powerful enough to knock me out while reducing
Klonopin dosage. Worked better for me than Remeron,
benadryl, booze, etc.

it has 2 main ingredients:

hyoscyamus niger: which has a little atropine,
scopolamine, and hyoscyomine (naturally occuring alkoloids)

ignatia amara: folk remody for moodiness/grief.
not sure on mode of action.

this stuff is strong. claims to be safe to take
with other meds, but I frankly would be leary.
My pdoc would have a heart attack if he new I
was taking it, but I was using every cheat I
could find to taper Klonopin (quit 5 mg in 6
weeks).

Apparently tribal indians use some of this to
tranquilize themselves in the bushes to remain
still while hunting game or some crud like that.

This is it:

http://www.discountblvd.com/156217.html

I think its a little scary now that I see what
these alkaloids are. It's enough to knock
me out, which is my major problem. There's no
hangover when I wake up like benadryl. I feel refreshed.
It's not a good idea to take to much of this if you
look closely at what's in it, especially the
atropine (must be trace amounts). Prey for
quality control.

But hey, it was recommended by the clerk at
the Texaco station, so it must be reliable.

John,

Thank you for the info. Currently I'm sleeping great, but I plan to buy some of the "voodoo sleep aid" to keep in my headboard for use if needed. In the past, I used about 1 mg of sublingual melatonin and initially I liked it. It helped me get to sleep and I would stay asleep (usually). However, I began to observe what I believed to be a correlation between increased depression and melatonin use. I think it was SLS that posted something similar a year or so ago.

As a bipolar, I consider mania (hypomania) and insomnia to be dancing partners and either one is capable of leading the dance. Therefore, it is beneficial for me to have an effective sleep aid handy just in case. Sonta works fairly well for me but it is two bucks a pill and supposedly has a relatively short shelf live (60 days, I think). If so, it goes bad sitting in my headboard.

However, my days of insomnia may be over because it has not been an issue since I began taking SAM-e four months ago. From what I've read, the methylating agent SAM-e is directly involved in the body's natural production of melatonin (as well as a plethora of other essential biochemical reactions such as the natural production of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, etc). John, I don't want to rant, but I'll tell ya, SAM-e gave me back my life!!

You help a lot of people at this site. Thank you for investing your time in the lives of other people!

-- Ron

PS Tell the Texaco attendant "thanks" from me.

You have to be kidding! I ordered about 60 pills in May, and I'm still using them! Some nights they work better than others, but that's just me. Where did you hear about the shelf life thing?

B. Lady,

I don't remember where I heard it. I do remember that I felt it was credible because I was really bummed about my "expired" Sonata.

In an attempt to answer your question I just went over to the Wyeth web site but I don't see anything about a "60 day expiration". Therefore, maybe I was provided misinformation.

On September 17, 2001, susan c (that nibbling mouse) said, "Just a note: Pharmasist said to me this week, to buy it no longer than a month or so at a time, because it loses its umph within 6 months." (I typed "sonata 'shelf life'" in the google search; ain't google grand?)

I'll buy that. Maybe mine has run out of umph. Thanks for the heads up; I'll ask my farm-a-cyst.

B. Lady:

I really like that mouse. I haven't read anything posted by her lately -- hope she did not accidently step into any mouse traps.

Ya, this post is the one I was probably thinking about when I wrote the "60 day expiration thing". Sixty days, six months, at least I got the six right. Sorry for the misinformation!
