I started klonopin on Thursday (.5 mg twice a day). My doctor bumped it to 1 mg. All I want to do is sleep and I have lost almost all sense of enjoyment in everything. Is this the klonopin, or the depression I was already in (or the increase in lithium stamping down my thryoid).

akc, I felt klonopin was increasing my depression so I stopped taking it a few days ago. It was the only med I was taking at the time. For my purposes it's good for ocassional use, but not to take everyday. -mist

It could be the Klonopin, although it sounds like there are other possible causes as well. I get the impression that your doctor increased the Klonopin dose awfully fast; were you feeling sedated when you were on the 0.5 mg dose? If so, my suggestion would be to talk to your pdoc about going down to 0.5 mg (or even 0.25 mg) to see if that helps, then work from there.

There sounds like a lot of different factors here; there are known cases of people becoming depressed on klonopin, although I've been on it for 4 yrs w/o a problem. You say you are already are in a depressed episode, has your thyroid been tested? I had lots of trouble with lithium. It's normal for you to feel sedated for a few days after a klonopin dose increase, but that usually goes away. So if you have a really good pdoc, he/she should be able to rule out 1 med or condition at a time. I hope you feel bettter soon- judy

I find klonopin (and ativan) very sedating. I wouldn't be able to function on 1 mg even once a day, taken at night. I was taking .25 mg at night and had a hard time getting out of bed in the morning.
So, first, I'd say that the sedation could be a factor. But I also have been wondering about the benzo adding to my depression. Seems plausible to me. Sleep medication (Sonata) made me depressed.

This is the reason my pdoc was always trying to get me off my klonopin. She said it causes peripheral depression. If I take it every day, I do get more depressed. I have to take it only when I need it or I'm a total suicidal lunatic.

I wonder what she means by "peripheral depression?"

Peripheral depression? I guess you would just be depressed around the edges?? Where's the edge?

It is the one I'm thinking of jumping off of.
This is the end of the thread.
