i just took a pre employment physical and they say my liver has some problems. is there any relation with effexor and liver problems? i saw a few places that it does effect the liver but haven't found any solid evidence what it is. i'm taking 300mg per day and have been on it about 4 months. seems to work good, but at first was tough gettin thru the side effects. i now am trying to wean myself off it. thanks for any insight!

Horsmans, Yves MD. De Clercq, Michel MD. Sempoux, Christine MD. Venlaxafine-Associated Hepatitis. Annals of Internal Medicine. 130(11):944, June 1, 1999:
"We believe that there was a causal association between venlafaxine and hepatitis because the histologic findings supported drug-related hepatotoxicity, other causes of hepatitis were excluded, discontinuation of venlafaxine therapy led to recovery, and venlafaxine can increase liver aminotransferase levels. Liver function test results should therefore be regularly monitored in patients receiving venlafaxine..."

Sal,What is the likelyhood of this happening? Should liver function tests be done? I have been on Effexor XR for about 5 months. I have been at the dose 225mg for about 2 months. My doctor added Celexa with hopes of eventually tapering off Effexor. I am worried about this though, because Effexor really works for me. I have anorgasmia, and that is why he wants to switch. But, sometimes you have to weigh the benefits with the risks. I don't know what to do. I am scared Celexa will not work as well.
Do you have any more health info about Effexor?? Thank You so much!!Any opinions??
Debbie

You may want to start the prozac before you've completely weaned off the effexor. I don't know anything about dosages, but someone here should be able to give you the information. I think switching to the prozac is a way of avoiding any withdrawal problems, and you'll have the added benefit of it being the AD you'll be taking.Willow

My liver enzymes are elevated. I do have some concern for this, but no doctor has ever suggested that I stop any of the medication. Tylenol affects the liver. So if you take any type of Tylenol or it generic, that could also be a reason why your liver enzymes are not normal. I have had to weigh the risks with the benefits. I opt to enjoy the years that I have left, than live a longer more miserable life.
This is the end of the thread.
