Geodon

Posted by ShelliR on March 16, 2001, at 23:23:35

My first try at taking geodon today was really bad. I felt shakey and had to cancel an business appointment because I was too disoriented. I have 20mg capsules (samples from my pdoc) and took one. Does anyone think it would be worth it to open the capsule and dump some of the powder out and try again? Has anyone had the experience of trying miniscule amounts and being able to eventually build up with atypical antipsychotics? Or is this the kind of thing that since it felt bad I should trust it is not the right med for me? As in the quick trial theory and move on.

p.s. the more I read about omega3, the more hopeful I am that it can be really helpful as an adjunct. In one nine month study they stopped the placebo after three months because the omega group was doing so much better that they switched everyone over. (This was for a bipolar study).

Zyprexa might be worth a try before ziprasidone, because of fewer side-effects for some. Have you tried Zyprexa?

We're already been around this before, although you might not remember. I am not willing to take on the weight gain from zyprexa. I know you feel differently. I am asking you to accept my feelings this time without comment. shelli

Shelli,

My pDoc actually suggested that I start Geodon by cutting the capsules and shaking some out. It doesn't make for an exact dose and these particular capsules are a pain. At least it doesn't taste bad. I started it that way due to my previous extreme sensitivity to meds such as Zyprexa.
Currently I am working with a trial of 20mg bid, as I've been able to tolerate it reasonably well. We shall see. The verdict isn't in. One way to start with a significantly lower dose is to take it without food. To quote the prescribing info: "Adsorption of ziprasidone is increased up to two-fold in the presence of food." I find myself arranging doses around my schedule - like taking it after I have to drive. Irregular dosing isn't optimal, but neither are accidents.

Blessings,

Chris A.

Chris, thanks for the feedback. I can't believe that my pdoc said nothing about food versus empty stomach. And usually I automatically decrease her initial dose, but with the capsules, it is really hard. But maybe I will try. shelli
