I've had some strange reactions to the meds I've taken over the years, but this one takes the cake. I thought I might be having an unrelated reaction to something else, but I'm fairly sure it was the Nortriptyline I was taking. 2 days after I began Nortrip I had a strange feeling in my... rear end. I didn't connect it to the med, but when my rear end started to really hurt I knew it right away. I stopped the med as soon as I made the connection. I had only gotten up to 50mgs. Anyway, within a day or two after stopping, I called my PDoc. He told me the med had nothing to do with the pain. Then he made a comment which pissed me off, something like, "well, we seem to have these sort of problems all the time with you" ; he said it sarcastically. Mind you, this Doc is also my therapist. I've been with him for a year and a half and haven't gotten anywhere with him.
The long and short of this is, I feel betrayed by my PDoc, and now that I've lost this trust, I can't see myself going back to him. I cancelled my last appointment with him, knowing I had 3 weeks before I would see him again. This should give me some time to make up mind.
Anyway, has anyone run into this side effect before (on Nortrip or any drug?) I went to an old PDR book , and lo and behold, there was the side effect (anal pain), listed along with laundry list of others.
My PDoc has never been the gentle type; he comes off a little snooty and uptight. I thought his approach would give me the discipline I needed to find the right med, but right now I don't really trust the man nor think he can help any longer.

Tom,
Nothing ever made my depression worse than nortriptyline. And you are absolutely right to dump your psychiatrist and find someone else. If he were a shoe salesman he'd be out of business in about 30 seconds. Why accept a condescending attitude from a "professional" who is too lazy and conceited to check the PDR before dismissing your side effects as another minor irritation in his day? If we don't stand up as consumers and kick a little butt, then guys like that will continue to get away with bad behavior.
Best wishes,
Mark H.

Ugh! What a jerk!
Do try to find another psychiatrist. Remember, part of depression is that feeling of helplessness. Don't make it true, you DO have power here, you have the ultimate power: you can vote with your checkbook.
That said, nortriptyline was not particularly helpful for me, either. And I, too, experienced the 'that's not a side effect' talk from a doctor (in my case, hypoglycemia from Effexor XR. Now that I've dropped the dose, I'm back to being a bit too high. {sigh})
Good luck!

I agree completely.Oh, and you may want to tell him you only thought it was the Nortiptyline giving you the anal pain, but have realized it's actually HIM!!!!
Couldn't resist that one.
Good luck finding a new doctor. You deserve better.

It was kind of scary leaving that pdoc's office knowing that all of a sudden I was out on the street alone. I had to set my sites on finding a new doc right away. That actually wasn't a bad thing, because it gave me something I had been missing all along....'hope'. The thought of a new doctor and the possible success I might have gave me hope. I certainly wasn't finding success or hope where I had been!
Fire him. That alone might make you feel better than anything he ever did for you. And it's free! lol

> JohnLTom,
I had similar experiences with several docs, docs of all kinds actually. Everyone reacts differently to every med and for them to tell you that it is not the med when you know it is and to be condescending about it, is completely unacceptable! Move on from him and move on fast!!! Kimberly

I think your doc will do more harm than good. I'm glad you didn't let his demeaning comment convince you that the symptom was all in your mind. Some people would just feel diminished rather than angry. The fact that you were angry is a positive comment on your self-worth. I agree with everyone else when I say, fire away!!!

I just jumped in with nothing useful to add! I'm having a rotten day and the thought of firing incompetent Pdocs cheered me right up. I'd like to hear how you go about picking a replacement if you feel like posting. Good luck!

I say take what nortrip you have left and make it into a suppository for that pdoc.
cheers,
bob[have to chime in, tho, as one for whom nortrip has done wonders ... sorry it didn't work for you, Tom]
