I have heard recently that perscription medications
can be bought in Canada at much lower prices than here
in U.S.I take quite a few meds, do not have insurance, and
I am looking for a legitimate pharmacy to work with me.
I have perscriptions from my doctor or my doctor will
call in the perscriptions directly. I will pay via
VISA credit card. I guess this is legal. Does anybody
know how this works and/or know a specific pharmacy
that I can contact?

John - The way I understand the laws is that Canadian pharmacists are not allowed to fill prescriptions written by doctors who are not licenced in that particular province. Even a prescription written by a doctor in Saskatchewan cannot be filled by a pharmacy in Alberta, unless the doctor is licenced in Alberta as well. Prescriptions from outside the province are sometimes filled, but technically it is illegal and the pharmacist can lose his licence. So, if you want to buy prescriptions in Canada, you must see a Canadian doctor in the province that you want the prescription filled in. The doctor's fee would offset any savings that you could get by purchasing cheaper generic drugs in Canada. Hope this helps - Cam W.

I live in Maine and wanted to try Moclobemide, which is available in Canada but not USA. So I looked into it. You can get Canadian medications, either because they're cheaper or because they're not available in USA. Either way. BUT, a Canadian doctor has to see you and write the prescriptions. I had to make a day-trip to and from Canada and see a doctor at a health clinic there. Once the initial visit has been made, they can renew refills by mail for up to a year. After a year you have to make a personal appearance again.
There might be a way though for your own doctor to work with a Canadian physician by phone. I think that's possible. I wouldn't know how to find out, but maybe your doctor can.
I saw a story on TV a couple months ago about a bus-trip of senior citizens who regularly cross the border to get prescriptions filled. The pharmacies they dealt with required only the USA prescription. That isn't really legal in Canada, but some pharmacies do it anyway. I think they're plenty happy to get a busload of customers. :)

Greetings to JohnL:
I, too, saw the same story on TV, which caused a brouhaha here in the US, the media, of course, having a field day with it.
Isn't it rather disgusting that in the very rich USA old, tired, handicapped, ailing senior citizens are FORCED to journey to another
country to save quite a bit of money on medications they need in order to live. Otherwise, if they paid the US prices for these same drugs, they'd
be forced to cut down on their food allowance; hence, Kitty-Kat Tuna Casserole every night. Is this any way to run a railroad?

There was a report ABC's evening news tonight that said you could get your perscriptions filled in Canada via the internet. I have been trying to find the site but have not been able to as yet.
Apparently you get a prescription from your US Dr and then somehow have it filled by a Canadian pharmacy via the internet. Apparently since the Canadian Government buys these drugs in bulk they reap large discounts.
I found one site but I do not think it is the site they were discussing on the evening news.
If anyone else finds it I would appreciate being notified for both myself and for the seniors I teach. If the US government is not going to take care of it's people then they got to help themselves...it is the American Way :)Thanks....

Some of my patients have had good experiences with a pharmacy on the Web at www.pharmacy-online.ca.
The prices are great . . . about 50% of what they are in the USA. The only complaint I have heard is that it can take around a month for the meds to arrive.
Best regards . . .
