xanax question

Posted by PJ on February 15, 2000, at 20:35:05

Hi all,

I've been doing some research on Xanax lately and wanted some input from those of you on it. The best I can tell from what I've read is that I probably fall into the "transient anxiety" category. I also have bad PMS. My doc has written me a scrip for five days of Xanax but everything I'm reading indicates you need to taper off withdrawal?? My doc said nothing about that. I mostly want to take it now because I haven't slept all night since October (wake up in the wee hours with my one year old and can't get back to sleep because I can't turn my brain off) and I am at the end of my rope.

Also, anyone have any experience with Kava Kava??

FYI, I just went off Zoloft in November after being on it nearly a year (post partum depression and PMS)...tired of feeling like I was in a fog--neither truly up or down--and mostly tired of lack of sex drive. I also felt like I "plateaued" on it just couldn't keep upping my dose.

I know I'm probably living in dreamland, but is there anything you can take that is nonaddictive and works fast (like an aspirin) that you can take when you need it and not just day in and day out??

PJ

PJ - Five days of Xanax doesn't need tapering, usually that is done if you have taken the drug for 7 or mores, multiple doses per day. Taking Xanax as needed (prn) is also an acceptible way to take the med, without requiring a taper. Kava kava is also a relatively safe drug when taken alone. Chronic ingestion (>3 months) can lead to dry, flaky skin, reddened eyes, puffy face and muscle weakness. Overdose may produce paralysis od the respiratory center. Concurrent alcohol consumption increases the toxicity of Kava kava. You should not take a dose of over 250mg of kavalactones (the active ingredient) per day. Hope this helps - Cam W.

Been down the Xanax route. Nowadays I take 1/2 a Benadryl at bedtime when I have trouble. Works as fast as an aspirin and is non-addicting.
