symptoms of stress

Posted by coral on February 6, 2004, at 20:46:34

This family mess is getting to me. I'm manifesting symptoms of stress. No symptoms of depression (thank heavens) but I'm feeling so wretched and it's bringing back some pretty blasted awful memories of the depression.

Nothing quite like family to push buttons in a big way. You probably have a good idea of what's coming, which is a little reassuring; but it can be so wearing.

I'm doing a guardianship issue that is very adverserial--my mom, my aunt (who is in a nursing home and doesn't communicate or understand anything), and my cousin (the aunt's son who is trying to get all her money). We've gotten it to the point where mom is guardian of the person and cousin is guardian of the estate--but there has been an INCREDIBLE amount of squabbling, and 12-year-old behavior and nastiness between my mom and cousin, and I'm fed up with it. It's been a couple of years now, and there's always something else to deal with. So...I can relate a little maybe, and as long as you're not peeing off the third floor balcony, your stress can be considered under control.:)

Good luck, and thank heavens for your WH. Does he know this could be a rough patch for you, and how he's likely to be affected (your 'losing it')? It's ok to lose it, BTW.

Maybe they need a spell to get them in line.

Take care!
Shar

The adult day care filed a complaint w/adult protective services and probate court, accusing us of neglect and abuse because mom's losing weight. Wellllllllllll, she's in last stage Alzheimer's, folks. Her physician submitted a letter stating he saw no signs of abuse or neglect, that what she's experiencing is normal at her stage of the disease, and that the family is doing a remarkable job. (My sister is doing an absolutely fabulous job taking care of her!) I live 150 miles away. Her attorney has responded to the complaints and the court is challenging his right as her attorney. He's been my parents' atty for years.... he's a partner at one of the top ten US law firms.

My mother is realistically within her last months of life . . . . and and and and...........

Yes, WH understands........ bless him.

Oh, this sounds awful.

I'm so sorry you are having to deal with all of this.

How to make a sad situation tragic, really.

I hope you have the professional support needed both for caring for you mother and for advocating for yourselves. And peer support from other families who have been through similar situations.

Thank you, Noa. We have one of the finest attorneys in the country (literally). We're filing a complaint about the day care's misconduct. Her physican is solidly behind the family, in all aspects of her care.

This all should just go away..... but it hasn't.

I would strongly recommend you look into hospice care for your mom. I've recently started volunteering for a hospice organization here, and because they deal with folks who are in the last months of their lives, they are familiar with what happens when people are 'end stage.' I'm not saying your doctor is not aware, just that the hospice care folks (if there were any in her area) would probably be able to deal with the adult day care folks also.

Just a suggestion. Also, a palliative care physician could be of help for the same reason (tho they work with folks at all stages of illness).

I'm very sorry to hear all this is happening, and very delighted that your sister is doing such a great job!

Hang in there!
Shar
