disabled + looking for work

Posted by maree on May 14, 2008, at 23:51:46

OK, for 20 years I was not disabled, and was a highly prized employee...for the last 10 years I worked a full time and 2 part time jobs concurrently. I loved my jobs, they were exactly what I had always wanted, and I was good at them.
Then I had a stroke and became physically disabled, with poor learning skills through short term memory loss, and with chronic fatigue.
I sit at home with nothing to do all day, and wish that I could get, AND KEEP a job. I have had a small handful of jobs since the stroke...all within my field of experience, and each has lasted either the contract period (one only which was 2 months) or the trial period.
Sure I am not as good as my resume, but, in a couple of cases I have been fired because of my attitude...I get very aggressive when people treat me like I am retarded, or look down on me because I am disabled. Maybe I can hold my tongue if it only happens 2 or 3 times, but not when it happens regularly, and it calls into question my ability to do the job.
I have fibromyalgia, too, which means that I get so damned tired that by the time it gets to 2pm in the afternoon, I am really having to push my self to keep going.
I need a job where I do not have to deal with the public, nor a whole lot of self promoting work colleagues who are only too eager to put me down. Yes, data entry sounds great, except that I can only use one hand with any sort of dexterity, the other is semi paralised, pure reception work is out because my short term memory loss would make that an impossibilty. Because I can no longer move and "do" quickly and easily, most jobs are not possible for me, particularly jobs that require multi tasking. The only jobs that I could do well have been taken over by the computer, eg manual bookkeeping, but with accounting programs so cheap these days it is not possible to find a business that needs a manual bookkeeper, and those that do, have a bookkeeper who is hanging onto her job for dear life because she knows how difficult it would be to replace it.
Anyone think of a job that I could do?
