In reply to How to withdraw from Zyprexa, posted by Guy on June 3, 2006, at 13:11:52
> I'm wondering if anyone has had experience withdrawing from Zyprexa. I have been on this med for over a year, along with clonazepam. I'm down to a small crumb of clonazepam (less that 1/8 mg) but am still taking 10 mg Zyprexa every night before bed. My goal is to stop all meds, but after visiting a popular insomnia site, am fearful that I have only extreme insomnia to look forward to. According to some people on the insomnia board, Zyprexa is very powerful and absolutely the worst in terms of rebound insomnia, even after a slow taper. Some people claim they had to go a whole month without sleep after stopping Zyprexa. Unlike most people, I become very agitated (even suicidal) if I experience too much insomnia. Just wondering where to go from here.
I am sorry that I can't offer you any advice except to say that it probably makes sense to taper gradually.
I have taken Zyprexa before, and never had any trouble coming off of it. However, I have never been on it for more than a few months at a time. Zyprexa exerts some of its sedative effects by acting as an antihistamine. You might be able to use diphenhydramine (Benadryl) as a temporary substitute and taper from there.
Please let us know how you do with it.
