COLD TURKEY - Effexor and Cymbalta

Posted by SLS on February 11, 2006, at 10:12:35

I don't think it is a good idea to discontinue Effexor or Cymbalta abruptly and attempt to withdraw from them "cold-turkey". Doing so seems to lead to a LONGER period of withdrawal symptoms as well as producing symptoms that are more intense.

Of course, abruptly discontinuing any antidepressant or anticonvulsant is probably not a good idea. SSRI withdrawal can be as bad as that of Effexor and anticonvulsant withdrawal can lead to seizures.

For Effexor, Cymbalta, SSRIs and benzodiazepines, I have had success discontinuing these drugs using a flexible-dosing taper strategy. One can find explanations of this in the archives.
