What you are experiencing is almost certainly the depression itself. Often, irritability is a sign of improvement when one's depression is just beginning to lift. You are caught in-between depression and remission. If you were to discontinue the drug entirely, the depression would probably take on its more familiar vegetative quality.

I know how important it is to avoid becoming manic when no treatment is immediately available to prevent it. Again, though, I think you are much better taking a reduced dosage every day than pulsing the drug and risking non-response or an acute manic reaction.
