Roth: benzos for those with faulty GABA gene?

Posted by Fred23 on April 11, 2005, at 20:04:47

Last year, in Jan 2004, the discovery was published about a gene causing faulty GABA processing, leading to overactive brain circuits, that those affected might attempt to quell with alcohol, and thus be at risk for alcoholism:

That seemed to the reason I've always had an attraction to alcohol, as when I tried benzodiazepines, they removed my desire to drink.

So it would seem that having a maintenance dose of benzos would level the GABA functioning, and thus eliminate the urge to drink.

But, as benzos are already controversial, giving benzos to someone with a hint of an alcoholic past is even more controversial.

Are you familiar with this issue?
