My therapist and I were laughing about the fact that the stuff that gets reported in a baby book must have changed over the years. I put down my son's first word, and cute stories about his words for things, and his first step, and adorable habits he had. Certainly nothing of an intimate nature.
My mother wrote about how much I was a fussy crying baby, and about how my father was still out of a job, and the fights they had or my very very favorite... "(Dadddy) pretended to hit me (mother) and Dinah acted as if he had broken her heart - wouldn't have anything to do with him." To clarify on that last one... Daddy did not hit anyone at all, pretend or for real, in all the many years I knew him. The story does not seem likely, although amplified versions have me whacking him on the knees and telling him something like "no hit mommy. bad daddy."
The number of disturbing entries versus adorable ones seem high to my eyes.
Was it the custom to use baby books as a diary in the good old days? Were my mother's entries the norm?
