LOL! Crack myself up.
Yep, I'm berating myself now over something similar. And I've got that voice in my head saying, "Get over it! That happened a long time agao, what is wrong with you that you're still dragging that around?" So I've got it both ways -- too afraid to start down that road, and too ashamed not to try. So, I'm stopped dead, facing the entrance to a road that scares me, with traffic honking behind me.
I cna't manage the traffic metaphore as well as HappyFlower can, so I'll stop trying.
Now that you know that your own defenses are making it harder for you to get at these issues, you've gotten past the first step. Maybe the next thing to try is to identify what it is that's stopping you? What are you afraid will happen if you start down that road?
For me, of all things, one of the worst fears is that I'll wet my pants from crying so hard and being so afraid! What we're afraid of is often kinda nuts, you know? Once you recognize the specific fear, it's a lot easier to get past it. Identify that monster, and it's often much less frightening. It's a great feeling to laugh at an ogre, you know.
Good luck.
