My understanding of tranference is that it is when you feel a specific emotion toward your therapist, say love or lust, that you are really feeling toward someone else (or have felt toward someone else in the past). The feelings get "tranfered" over to the therapist. Countertranference is when the therapist feels feeings toward you, the client, that are really about someone else.
I fell in love with my ex-T, but he didn't believe so much in transference--he said that we can't help who we are attracted to, and that we were similar in age and interests, etc. My point is, we talked about transference and this is the definition he gave me.
Hope this was not confusing, and helps your understanding!
