In my case, back when I was doing therapy I had to be in a space that screamed ‘work!’, and to do nothing but work when I was there (except very occasional days when Freecell won out over work).
Now therapy is over and I’m in a slightly different working environment that means working at home a lot, and I get much less done. I won’t be back in the classroom for a few months, and I miss the routine of teaching.
Being able to focus on work despite all the problems is something that doesn’t come easily. But it’s essential, especially because it can provide some respite from the agony.
Is your job challenging enough? I know you’re very clever, and I wondered if your job might have become a bit dull if you’ve been doing it for a while. Maybe it would help if you took on new challenges at work. That might sound unthinkable if you have a lot of emotional issues to deal with, but it might help distract you. Or maybe that’s no help at all… Just a suggestion anyway.
