I don't know if this will be relevant or helpful to you, but I find that one thought that helps me when I am feeling a lot of pain is to remind myself that although I didn't CAUSE the pain, exactly, I am responsible for OWNING it and trying to do something to make it better. Just that one thought seems to help me calm down a bit, and then I can start thinking about what, exactly, I might be able to do to improve my dark state of mind. I think the reason that helps me is that I feel a little more in charge, rather than just at the mercy of whatever terrible mood may come along. I think this is one of the things they teach in DBT, although I don't have any personal experience of that.
I know things are very hard for you just now, jyl, and hope you will find it helpful to keep posting here- there are always caring and non-judgemental people listening.
