The President has a lot of power. He could issue an Executive Order to at least STUDY the idea in cooperation with NIH and NIMH. And then share their "study" info with the DSM people. And besides that is the whole point, to get the illness known as schizophrenia moved OUT of the DSM arena entirely. To get it recategorized as a formal brain illness, a Neurological illness instead of treating you like a mental incompetent.
Signing the petition wont hurt anything. Unless perhaps, you are a psychiatrist or psychologist yourself who has financial interests in preventing schizophrenia from slipping away. Then again, the vast majority of psychiatrists and psychologists dont really want to be involved in treating schizophrenics IMO. Most want to be involved in the worried well and less dramatic forms of mental illness.
Please sign it and please pass it on!!!!! At least it will get scrutinized by people in positions of political power if it can get 25,000 signatures in 30 days. Like I said, with the recent mass school shooting their is for the first time in my memory, heavy emphasis at the Washington DC levels on looking for solutions to prevent further events of mass violence. If a petition like this would get looked at seriously, now is a really good time.
