I thought sigismund's example was good:

I am so totally confused by what you are perceiving, and feel like I'm walking on eggshells with every word. It is not only uncomfortable, but not conducive to discussing politics, which are by nature inherently opinionated on sides of any fence. I don't purposely keep myself in a place of discomfort, so I think it is best to say sorry and politely bow out. Apologies extended to those who took offense.

Thanks.

It's fine to bow out, but if you change your mind, and for those who stay: I agree, people can be opinionated when discussing politics. The political equivalent of an I-statement is advocating for your opinion instead of opposing other opinions.
