Your kind rsk. I really care about the Cubs, but especially this year. It seemed the stars were all aligned. It was exactly 100 years since they last won the World Series. My mother, a diehard fan, turned 80 this year, and she may not live much longer. They had a pitching staff. The second best offense in baseball. I got tickets for me my daughter, my brother and my niece for the first playoff game. DeRosa hit an improbable home fun off their ace. All was right with the world...
Until the grand slam. The Dodgers went on to sweep us in three.
I couldn't have been more sick and dejected if it hadn't been for my Mom who told me that it was alright - that its simply fun to care about something so much.
Soon thereafter I began to get wrapped up in the election. A Democrat, I worried that Hillary might galvanize the opposition in a polarizing election. Then this remarkable man emerged as initially a possible alternative and then the frontrunner. His intellegence, poise under fire and intergrity were compelling. A black president in my lifetime seemed more unlikely than the Cubs becoming world champions. But the stars were aligned. And on a beautiful evening in Chicago, the home of the Cubs and the home of one very special man, hope was restored for this country and the world. My mom was right, it is fun to care about something so much.
