Why, for example, did Europeans have better values when they took over the world and brought misery to so many?
Because they were self-evidently better and more civilised, and in this sense they were saving the countries they appropriated from the depradations of their less worthy inhabitants, who did not 'mix their labours with the land' (Locke).
Kinda like the view that the invasion of Iraq was God's work.
