Optimism

When I said 'optimistic' I didn't mean 'good'.
Some of the very worst times in history have been optimistic.
(I think the French and Russian Revolutions were.
When you cut down a forest the chips fly.)
What I meant was that (rightly or wrongly) we looked forward then to the future with a feeling of optimism, whereas now there is (rightly or wrongly) a feeling of foreboding.
