When Tony Blair brought his career to a close (it being quite out of character for him to do something so negative as to resign) he told the nation that
'we are a contry ...at home in its own skin'
'this country is a blessed nation', and
'that this is the greatest nation on earth'.(Australians were told the same sort of thing by Mr Howard.)
While not being able to agree with any of these sentiments I am struck by what appears to be the desire of Mr Blair to 'connect' with his (then)electorate, or perhaps one should say, in deference to his style, 'audience'.
Leaders these days sometimes tell us about the excesses of the 60s and how they stand for something different.
They are too modest.
They feel like the some part of the counterculture all dressed up.
