I read a story about an Australian soldier in WWI on the Western Front.
During an attack he was stumbling through nomans land towards the German lines (in the conditions you read about), and he saw another Australian soldier with a crazed expression coming *toward* him out of the smoke and ruin, and what's more he knew the man from back home.

Both survived, and the first soldier never mentioned it.
I don't know how many soldiers (from all sides) were shot in WWI for desertion.
Tens of thousands, for sure.
