Australia, the oldest and driest continent, had coped with drought in the inland by having a protective crust of salt on the surface.
This was broken up by sheep and cattle, and drought was made much worse, and soil made unstable.
We have learned nothing, of course.
If only we had eaten kangaroos and emus instead of sheep and cattle.Successive governments have given irrigation rights that have lead to the collapse of the inland river systems.
And still people want the population to go up to 50 million.
The inland of Australia is so very badly damaged.
The response of the state ALP Government to the water problem is to build (wait for it) a desalination plant.
And where will the power for that come from?
(They say from renewable energy. That is the contempt in which they hold the electorate.)Our leaders (and the people) either do not understand this problem, or much more likely, do not care about it.
I really liked it when Al Gore said that to leave it to future generations was 'unethical in the extreme'.
