I know enough about real Australian values to know that they would never have been articulated by politicians. But the penetration of the market into culture has been so extreme that I'm not sure I know what's what anymore. No problem about compulsory voting though; just a problem about the available choice.
I think official Australian values boil down to who can con the people best with appeals to mateship, a concept so used that even to type it feels embarrassing. Just the concept for the Prime Minister.
Australia had, and maybe still does, egalitarian authoritarian ironic irreverent values.
The PMs great skill has been to portray himself as part of the mainstream.
