There is a well known account from the 30s somewhere in the USSR where a local leader is addressing some group (you can tell how much of this I remember) and, after he finishes speaking, is given a standing ovation.
After around half an hour of clapping, one of the audience abruptly (a mistake!) sits down followed by everyone else.
He is asked about this by the security services after the meeting, and told that you never want to be the first to stop clapping.
