At the moment I'm not too optimistic. But maybe I listen to too much Garland Robinette.
I'll probably be moving soon. Which hurts because my father's father's father's people come from around these parts. It was my great grandfather who moved up to the big city from the bayous. He's buried in the tomb with my grandfather and my father, and someday I was going to be there too. (Although in some ways that does seem a bit yucky.)
I hear the Fairgrounds are going to have a racing season, I guess next year. And the Symphony Book Fair is still going to be held. But will Liuzza's ever be back? Will New Orleans be New Orleans without frosted mugs of (root) beer and mounds of onion rings followed by stuffed mirletons or a good po-boy? I'm thinking of mounting a fund raising campaign to bring back Liuzza's.
I'm just in a rotten mood tonight. Maybe it will come back as wonderfully quirky as ever. It is a rather self sustaining city. The people who move here move here because they love it. And they are just as New Orleanian as the natives, if not moreso.
But I dunno. I've been trying to avoid the news, but I keep hearing snippets about financial disaster and limiting services to the "sliver by the river" that didn't flood. Maybe it's just the doomsayers.
