LDN

Posted by bleauberry on March 13, 2011, at 10:05:55

Just my opinion, and maybe 1000 others, LDN should be at the heart of every psychiatric patient's treatment. By itself it is not usually a cure. But in the vast majority of people it makes other treatments work that otherwise did not. We're talking a laundry list of conditions...psychiatric all kinds, crohns, lupus, MS, Lyme, on and on.....no matter, they all have one thing very common...depression.

Heroin addicts have discovered that ultra low dose naltrexone prevents tolerance and prevents withdrawal. LDN is usually 1.5mg to 4.5mg at bedtime. But since it's discovery about a decade ago, patients have discovered that much smaller doses can work better sometimes, and that trying it during the day sometimes works when bedtime didn't. The heroin or pain killer people discovered that doses as small as 1/10th of 1mg is what did the job nicely. The theory is that at such a tiny dose it blocked only the opioid receptors involved with dysphoria and tolerance, but not the ones involved with euphoria. Who knows.

No matter how you slice it, there is something very profound about LDN. I believe it has a huge beneficial role to play in treating depression. Sad, because it is mostly unknown by most doctors, and because it is dirt cheap with near zero risk or side effects.

The natural opioid system....mood, immunity, overall health, hormones....need say no more.

My doctor is a huge fan of LDN because she has seen it do so many wonderful things in the toughest cases. Currently it primarily used in "mystery" diseases or Lyme disease (which is a mystery in its own). But I firmly believe it has a large role to play in psychiatry and I am sad that the other drugs take priority over it.

If this is new to anyone, please just google LDN. Visit the home page, read about it other places too. Gather info. For those where this is not new, you've heard of it before or maybe you've even tried it before, maybe time for a revisit.
