SJW substitute for SSRIs or more?

Posted by KaraS on January 8, 2005, at 16:32:02

I have read that St. John's Wort is a good substitute for the SSRIs. Even Kelly writes this on his SJWinfo.org website (and he mentions that it is not a good substitute for the tricyclics). Yet the mechanism of action for SJW seems to be much different than the SSRIs - so is it fair to categorize it like that?

The SSRIs didn't do much for me besides control my anxiety. I'm wondering of SJW would likely be the same way. I'm trying to gauge whether it's worth trying it now and risk losing a couple of months time or whether I should start on an MAOI - maybe more certainty but definitely more risk.

Thanks for any insights you could offer.
