Vitamin E and selenium work synergistically as antioxidants, but that has nothing to do with the selenium-mercury interaction.
Selenium has an extraordinarily stong affinity for mercury. They react to form a covalent compound that is so tightly bound, so insoluble, that the solubility cannot be measured. It is estimated at one molecule in an olympic-sized swimming pool. If the mercury is bound like that, it can't hurt you in any way.
