In reply to 2 New Boards; 'Men' + 'Women' ??, posted by rollingthunder on June 5, 2009, at 21:29:41
It's a good idea to talk about those things. But couldn't anyone just put this in the subject line "women only please" or "men only" and post on psychology; or if its about meds-post gender preference on the med board; etc.?
The problem with that is there are already too many "categories"/boards here. That is exactly why some are dead. When someone new comes to visit the site, and sees the board of interest to them is inactive/too few postings, they go search for another. For example, if you were to find a mental health community, finding an appropriate topic place, such as "substance abuse", but saw no one posted for 3 months, would you want to use that site to post your question or story for input, or would you move on to another active site? And - Substance abuse applies to "psychology", "neurotransmitters", "medications", "faith", "health", "relationships", etc, etc...Where do I post my conversation at if I want to talk about how faith helped my sister with substance abuse, and there is stigma involved, but what medications should she be looking at, and her relationships are all ruined due to her addiction...
I mean see for yourself--go to the 'grief' board-there are only 6 or so posts since last YEAR.
There are already too many categories; many blend together. If you want to talk about, for example, what therapies are effective for eating disorders, yet want to know how medications augment therapy in addition to supplements available, would you post on the "medication" board, the "eating" board, the "alternative" board, or the "psychology" board? Should the person with the eating disorder exclude themselves from information about medications, therapy, nutritional supplements, etc, being that they will only see some narrow sliver that applies to their situation--meanwhile, many factors are involved they may miss?
Because we have so many topics of interest to the members here, should we just create, upon each request:
an anxiety board
a depression board
a those w/o health insurance board
a bipolar board
a schitzophrenia board
a personality disorder board
a borderline board
an anorexia board
a bulimia board
a domestic abuse suvivor board
a chronic fatigue syndrome board
a narcissist survivor board
a "I may be a sociopath" board
a medication "side effect" board
a psyconeuroendocronology board
a cross-gender board
a medical-industrial-complex board
a health reform board
a sexual abuse survior board
a sexual discussion board
a homoxexual board
a "i'm in financial distress" board
a board for creative people
a left-handed board
a fibromyalgia board
........I could talk about 100 other topics of interest; but see where I'm getting at? We all have diverse intersts, but if we create a seperate "board" for every interest, it takes away from the site..makes boards dead, leaves out crucial information that may help those and the others who read relevants posts, and defers potential members.
These things all blend together and it really does not make a lot of sense to seperate everything. Do minds think in "categories"?
99% of reputable websites have no more than 6 "categories" unless unusual circumstances dictate otherwise. Every IT business professional knows this.
I've been to other sites where there are dozens of seperate categories for each "issue" and was very turned off. I don't want to post on an "anxiety board" while there's so much relevant information on the "medical board" that applies to my situation. Which "board" will benefit me the most? Maybe it's just me....
