I thought it had been made known that Dr. Bob does not wish us to patrol the boards per se. He wishes for posters to take on part of the responsibility for board civility by reporting posts to Administration. Deputies are posters as well, and can report something ourselves if we see it. But he *does not wish* for us to patrol the boards in general. He wants posters to take on some of that responsibility. There are of course exceptions. But that is his general wish.
I recognize that sometimes posts are reported and the deputy decision is that the post is not in violation of civility guidelines, and that that may be frustrating to posters. However, the fact remains that the current system depends on poster notifications for consistency, by Dr. Bob's design and by Dr. Bob's instructions to us. Our decisions are also based on Dr. Bob's policies and instructions to us. And though Dr. Bob is not as visibly present on the boards, he does review notifications and our responses to them. If he believes that something is uncivil, he will let us know and we will act accordingly. But if notifications aren't made, he won't be able to do that.
This was greeted with appreciation when the policy was first announced, but most policies have both positive and negative aspects.
However, it would be unfair to blame this situation on deputy busyness. Deputies have actually always been concerned about this change in policy because of concerns about consistency. But over time, I've come to see that there are advantages as well in that sometimes posters work things out themselves.
If you wish to ensure board consistency, please report posts you believe to be uncivil.
