If you feel it's necessary to defend yourself, you can do so well within the civility guidelines by using "I" statements and without negatively characterizing the words or actions of others. For example "I don't believe that I am xxxxx."
But it might be just as effective to report uncivil posts rather than try to defend yourself. Because who a person is shows over time, and it isn't always necessary to defend yourself among people who know you. Your long term actions are the best defense of all.
That's a general statement, not specific to this situation or any other. I'm not sure I've come to believe it myself even, but it's what my therapist leads me to believe. And he's generally right, darn him.
